What: Yarden Wines Tasting
When: November 7, 2016 at 7:30
Where: JG 103
We are writing to invite you to our third tasting of the semester, with Victor Schoenfeld of Yarden Wines and the Golan Heights Winery in Israel. This is the first winery from Israel what we’ve had come during our time at Columbia, and we are really excited to welcome them to come present to the club. Israel is an up-and-coming wine region – Wine Spectator just did a feature on Israeli wines in its October Issue (you can find some of the articles and reviews here) and Yarden wines are some of the best-recognized and most well-established ones in Israel right now.
A description from the wine-maker:
Victor Schoenfeld of Golan Heights Winery/Yarden has been called “one of the most influential winemakers in Israel today.” To many, he embodies the modern Israeli wine era, with classic wines such as Katzrin, Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon and Odem Organic Chardonnay, and experimental ventures that have encompassed “Rom” (a collaboration with Zelma Long), Israeli dessert wines, and sparkling wines that defy expectations. Victor has been making wine in Israel for almost 30 years, working with a range of elevation and micro-climates in Golan Heights which account for a diversity of styles. A winemaker with a scientific discipline, Victor believes that knowing the exact soil type, climatic conditions, variety, clone and rootstock are essential to making top quality wines in a “new” region. Victor can present a range of wines from sparkling to full-bodied reds that illustrate Israel’s full potential.
What: Aged Wine Tasting (led by Bob Cunningham and Robin Kelley O’Connor)
When: October 30, 2016 from 4-6
Where: Case Lounge
Please join us for an incredibly rare opportunity to join an exclusive aged wine tasting. As you may or may not know, Case Lounge is a small, recently renovated space on the 7th floor. This event can only accommodate up to 18 participants because we will be tasting from a very old and rare collection we have inherited from a benefactor. DeVinimus has been holding this special tasting event for the past couple of years and it is clear that with the amount of wines we have left and their current stage of development, this is going to be the LAST ONE (unless we can find another generous donor of course!).
We give priority to the current board members and your plus one, before we open it up to the general members of the club. If you want to join, this would set you back additional $80 each (i.e. it is not covered by the general membership fee). Please direct the due to Michael, preferably at his locker 1242 with an envelop of cash or check made payable to Columbia University.
What: Chateau Lagrange/Chateau d’Issan Tasting
When: October 25, 2016 at 8:00
Where: JG 104
We know it’s been a few weeks since Wines 101 and everyone is probably ready for another wine event – so it’s our pleasure to invite you all to a tasting of wines from the famous Chateaux Lagrange and D’Issan. Both Chateaux have been great friends of the club for years, and we’re happy to host them again. They are both among Bordeaux’s best, and were both included in the original 1855 classification of Left Bank Bordeaux producers, which is still the most important and prestigious classification of highest quality Bordeaux wine.
Matthieu Bordes (see him speak here!), general manager and winemaker at Lagrange will be in New York for a few days and has found time in his schedule to personally present several of his wines with us. The tasting will be a side-by-side vertical tasting of the two producers’ wines starting with some recent vintages, and then moving back in time. If you’ve never had a chance to experience first hand the way a wine develops over the years, this should be really educational and fun.
When: Tuesday, September 20th at 7:00

What: Bob’s Wines 101
Join us for an introduction to wine tasting with our very own Bob Cunningham! We will be tasting our way through 9 different varietals that range widely in style and taste. Should be a great experience for beginners and experienced wine drinkers alike!
If you are interested in purchasing any of the wines, they all can be had from Acker Merrall Retail Store (160 West 72nd Street New York, NY), except for the two KRSMAs (Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon) which need to be ordered in. Let us know should any of you want to explore a little bit more on your own these two Indian delights! Remember – Acker offers 10% discount on all the purchases to Columbia ID card holders so have your ID on hand with you when visiting their store.
When: Monday, April 18th at 7:30
What: Gruppo Mezzacarona Tasting
Join us for a tasting of Italian wines produced by Mezzacarona in the Italian Dolomites. The wines from the mountains in north Italy tend to be crispy, floral, and perfect for this warmer weather.
When: Thursday, January 28th at 7:30
What: Corison Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting
Our first tasting of 2016 will be a special vertical tasting of Corison’s Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford Bench in Napa Valley. Cathy Corison is something of a legendary figure whose career spans over 35 years including a 10 year stint as a winemaker at venerable Chappellet winery on Pritchard Hill. She set up her own boutique winery in the so-called Bench land between Rutherford and St Helena in the late 1980s and has since attracted cult following and been generously praised in the wine critic circle. Because of the minute size of production (from a mere 8 hectares of land) and reputation for making age-worthy and graceful cabernet, her wines are highly prized and sought after among consumers and collectors alike.
Please RSVP ASAP!

What: Chateaux Lagrange and D’Issan Tasting
Both Chateaux have been great friends of DeVinimus for years, and we’re happy to host them again! They are among Bordeaux’s best, and were both included in the original 1855 classification (compiled at the request of Napoleon III) of Left Bank Bordeaux producers, which is still the most important and prestigious classification of highest quality Bordeaux wine.
Matthieu Bordes, general manager and winemaker at Lagrange will be in New York for a few days and has found time in his schedule to personally present several of his wines with us. Bob Cunninham, who many of you met at Wines 101, will be standing in for Emmanuel Cruse, Matthieu’s counterpart at D’Issan and another friend of the group.
The tasting will be structured as a side-by-side vertical tasting of the two producers’ wines starting with a couple recent vintages, and then moving back in time. If you’ve never had a chance to experience first hand the way a wine develops over the years, this should be an educational treat.
Keep your eyes open for a exciting tasting e-mail coming your way!
Several years ago, Bob Cunningham arranged to have a collection of aged Bordeaux and Burgundy wines donated to the club. The youngest wines in the collection are about 40 years old now, and we will be serving around 20 of those wines at this special aged wine tasting.
Because of the limited amount of wine, this is always a smaller event, so RSVP quickly!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Wines 101 tasting. It was great way to start off the year and lay the groundwork for future events! Hopefully everyone got to try something new.
For those who may have misplaced their notes, here is what we drank:
Remember, the Terroir Tasting will be coming up in the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!
